Rapid Prototyping Lab

Modular hardware and software solutions for autonomous science

Technological solutions to the world’s grand challenges require advances at a pace that exceeds the capabilities of human scientists alone. When combined, robotics and artificial intelligence have the potential to accelerate science by enabling more targeted, data-driven hypotheses and more reproducible, continuous experimentation.

Argonne’s Rapid Prototyping Laboratory (RPL) develops hardware and software solutions to integrate diverse equipment – for applications such as sample handling, synthesis, characterization, and safety – into the modular and intuitive Workflow Execution Interface (WEI). When integrated with WEI, the Globus ecosystem helps manage end-to-end autonomous workflows that include data collection, reduction, and inversion, machine learning training, experiment steering, coupled simulation, data storage, and publication.

The RPL enables autonomous science across diverse domains, with projects ranging from the design of new materials for energy storage and the discovery of anti-microbial compounds to the production of isotopes for various medical applications.
